The boat boom of the 1970s and 80s is now revealing its downside. After half a century, many of these vessels are worn out, often neglected, and in need of recycling. For fiberglass vessels, this is a difficult task, resulting in a large portion ending up in incinerators after dismantling. VYNieuwpoort and the non-profit organization Straal are joining forces for the sustainable transition and repurposing of vessels at the end of their life cycle.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>As early as 2015, <strong>VYNieuwpoort took the initiative to recycle decommissioned vessels on their premises.<\/strong> It appears that some of these boats are also worth restoring. This is precisely where Straal vzw steps in with a circular business model that restores neglected vessels in a socially inclusive boat workshop\u2014a place where volunteers, people distanced from the labor market, and experts collaborate\u2014to later give them a second life as shared boats.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast forward to 2025, 10 years later. VYNieuwpoort still recycles old vessels but also makes room on its premises for a  <strong>\u2018Straalhub\u2019: a mobile boat workshop. A UFO 27 is being refurbished there,<\/strong>  a small boat that was waiting to be recycled and is receiving a second life thanks to the project. Thanks to subsidies from <strong>Vlaanderen Circulair\/OVAM<\/strong>, the help of <strong>an enthusiastic group of volunteers led by Straal coordinators Laura and Thijs Van Wingen<\/strong>, the marina, and several professionals for inspection (BYSC), fiberglass expertise (Artois), and the electric motor (P&amp;E Lowlands), the refurbished sailboat will set sail again in 2026. The boat will resume the role of the 27-foot vessels: a solid boat for novice sailors to use via Straal&#8217;s boat-sharing platform at sea.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the marina, it is important that entry-level boats are not only correctly recycled at the end of their life cycle but that\u2014just as with housing\u2014there is also room for renovation. These boats date from a period when fiberglass and labor were still inexpensive, meaning no expense was spared at the time.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/554077027_806892311852314_8778043435622539981_n-1024x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/554077027_806892311852314_8778043435622539981_n-1024x571.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/554077027_806892311852314_8778043435622539981_n-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/554077027_806892311852314_8778043435622539981_n-768x429.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/554077027_806892311852314_8778043435622539981_n-1536x857.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/vynieuwpoort.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/554077027_806892311852314_8778043435622539981_n.jpg 1860w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to Straal&#8217;s business model and community, the renovation costs can be recouped by putting the vessel back into service through circular and shared use. This gives new sailors the chance to experience offshore sailing again with a solid, simple boat while simultaneously gaining experience with an electric motor.<strong> From 2026, practical lessons will also be offered to the Straal community: a new generation of sustainable and circular water sports enthusiasts.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask any sailing club where the older members gained their first sailing experience, and you will find it was often exactly this type of boat. Their stories prove that you can effortlessly make the crossing or sail to France and the Netherlands with these vessels.
